On August 2, 2027, Bahariya Oasis will experience something extraordinarily rare.
For a little over six minutes, the Moon will completely cover the bright face of the Sun and turn the Western Desert into one of the world’s most remarkable eclipse-viewing landscapes.
Current eclipse calculations for Al Bawiti, the main town in Bahariya Oasis, show approximately 6 minutes and 18 seconds of totality, with maximum eclipse occurring around 12:53 PM local time. The partial phase is calculated to begin at approximately 11:29 AM and end around 2:15 PM.
That makes Bahariya one of Egypt’s most interesting locations for the 2027 eclipse.
Not simply because the eclipse lasts a long time.
But because Bahariya gives travelers the opportunity to combine a total solar eclipse with:
the Black Desert,
White Desert,
Crystal Mountain,
Agabat Valley,
desert camping,
and one of Egypt’s most unusual oasis landscapes.
NASA confirms that the August 2, 2027 event is a total solar eclipse crossing North Africa, including Egypt. At greatest eclipse, NASA’s calculations give a maximum central duration of roughly 6 minutes and 23 seconds.
For travelers planning a dedicated eclipse journey, that makes Egypt a major destination.
And Bahariya offers a very different experience from watching totality beside a large city.

Where Is Bahariya Oasis?

Bahariya Oasis lies in Egypt’s Western Desert, southwest of Cairo.
Egypt’s official tourism authority places Bahariya around 370 km southwest of Cairo and describes it as the closest major Western Desert oasis to the capital. It is known for palm groves, olive trees, natural springs, archaeological sites and access to the White and Black Deserts.
That location makes Bahariya especially useful for an eclipse itinerary.
You can travel from Cairo into the oasis, observe totality from a carefully selected legal site within the eclipse path, then continue deeper into the Western Desert.
For more background on the oasis itself, read our Bahariya Oasis Egypt Guide.
Will Bahariya Oasis Really Experience a Total Solar Eclipse?
Yes.
This is the central reason Bahariya is so important for 2027.
Al Bawiti lies inside the path of totality, not merely close to it.
Current Timeanddate calculations classify the August 2 event there as a total solar eclipse, with a total phase lasting roughly 6 minutes and 18 seconds.
That distinction is enormous.
A 99% partial eclipse is still fundamentally different from 100% totality.
During totality, the Sun’s bright photosphere is completely covered.
That allows the solar corona to become visible and produces the dramatic darkness associated with a true total solar eclipse.
Travelers flying to Egypt specifically for the event should therefore make sure their viewing location is actually inside the path of totality.
Bahariya satisfies that requirement.
Bahariya Oasis Eclipse Times on August 2, 2027
For Al Bawiti, current calculations are:
Eclipse phase | Approximate local time |
Partial eclipse begins | 11:29 AM |
Maximum eclipse | 12:53 PM |
Partial eclipse ends | 2:15 PM |
Totality duration | 6m 18s |
The entire visible event lasts roughly 2 hours and 46 minutes from the beginning to the end of the partial phases.
This is important when planning the day.
You should not arrive at the viewing site five minutes before maximum.
A well-run eclipse program should be in position significantly earlier so travelers can prepare:
eclipse glasses,
cameras,
solar filters,
shade,
water,
tripods,
and viewing equipment.
The eclipse isn’t just six minutes.
The full experience unfolds gradually for almost three hours.
Why Six Minutes of Totality Is So Significant
Six minutes sounds short in ordinary life.
During a total solar eclipse, it feels completely different.
Many total eclipses provide much shorter total phases.
The August 2027 eclipse is exceptional because totality approaches the theoretical high end for modern eclipse events.
NASA calculates the maximum central duration of the entire eclipse at about 6 minutes 23 seconds, with greatest eclipse occurring near 25.5°N, 33.2°E.
Al Bawiti’s approximately 6:18 therefore places Bahariya very close to the longest-duration part of the event.
You’re not choosing a location that barely enters the totality zone.
You’re getting more than six minutes of complete solar coverage.
That gives observers additional time to appreciate:
the corona,
the darkened sky,
the changing horizon,
bright stars or planets that may become visible,
and the extraordinary atmosphere that surrounds totality.
What Happens During Totality in Bahariya?
The process begins more than an hour before maximum.
At first, the Moon takes only a small bite out of the Sun.
The desert still looks normal.
Over time, more of the solar disk disappears.
The character of the sunlight begins changing.
Shadows can become unusually sharp.
The temperature may drop.
The landscape begins to look different.
Then the remaining bright portion of the Sun disappears.
Totality starts.
For roughly six minutes and eighteen seconds around Al Bawiti, the Moon completely covers the Sun’s bright surface.
The corona becomes visible around the Moon.
The sky darkens dramatically.
The horizon can retain twilight-like color.
And the Western Desert enters an unusual midday darkness.
Then sunlight returns.
The process reverses through another partial phase.
For many eclipse travelers, those few minutes justify years of planning.
Bahariya vs Luxor for the 2027 Eclipse
Luxor will receive enormous attention in 2027, and for good reason.
Current calculations for the Luxor region give around 6 minutes 23 seconds of totality, with maximum eclipse around 1:05 PM local time.
Al Bawiti receives approximately 6 minutes 18 seconds.
That’s only a few seconds difference.
So the more useful question isn’t:
Which has longer totality?
It’s:
What kind of Egypt experience do you want around the eclipse?
Bahariya Oasis | Luxor |
~6m18s totality | ~6m23s totality |
Western Desert setting | Nile Valley setting |
Black & White Desert access | Ancient temples and tombs |
Desert camps possible | Extensive hotel infrastructure |
Smaller oasis atmosphere | Major tourism city |
4×4 safari experience | Cultural and archaeological itinerary |
Luxor is extremely attractive for travelers who want ancient Egypt.
Bahariya is especially interesting for travelers who want astronomy combined with desert adventure.
The eclipse duration is excellent in both.
The trip around it is completely different.
Bahariya vs Siwa for the 2027 Eclipse
Siwa Oasis is another location inside the path of totality.
Current calculations give Siwa approximately 5 minutes and 31 seconds of totality, with maximum around 12:45 PM.
That’s a substantial eclipse.
But Bahariya provides almost another 47 seconds of totality at Al Bawiti.
More importantly, the two destinations offer different experiences.
Siwa is famous for:
salt lakes,
springs,
Shali Fortress,
Amazigh culture,
and the Great Sand Sea.
Bahariya provides direct access to:
Black Desert,
White Desert,
Crystal Mountain,
Agabat Valley,
and classic Western Desert camping.
If you want to understand the Siwa alternative, read our Siwa Oasis Egypt Guide.
Bahariya vs Cairo for the Eclipse
This comparison is much easier.
Cairo will not experience totality.
Current calculations show Cairo receiving a deep partial eclipse with a magnitude around 0.947, reaching maximum at approximately 12:55 PM.
That will still be visually impressive with proper solar viewing equipment.
But it is not the same astronomical event.
There will be no true total phase.
Travelers coming specifically for the total solar eclipse need to leave Cairo and enter the totality path.
Bahariya is one option for doing that.
Is the White Desert Inside the Path of Totality?
Not all of it.
This is one of the most important pieces of information for anyone planning a White Desert eclipse trip.
Farafra Oasis, which is closely associated with the White Desert, is currently calculated to experience a partial eclipse, not totality.
At Farafra, maximum eclipse occurs around 12:53 PM, with a magnitude of approximately 0.994.
That sounds extremely close to total.
But astronomically, 99.4% coverage is not interchangeable with 100%.
If any portion of the bright solar photosphere remains visible, you do not get the same total-eclipse experience.
This is why the correct itinerary is:
White Desert as part of the wider tour + confirmed eclipse viewing location inside the totality path around Bahariya or another suitable site.
Not:
Assume any location called White Desert automatically gets totality.
Bahariya and the Black Desert Eclipse
The Black Desert is particularly interesting for the 2027 event because it lies in the wider Bahariya region.
But there is a technical point worth understanding.
The Black Desert is a broad landscape, not one single viewing coordinate.
That means the exact duration of totality changes according to where your group stands.
Al Bawiti gives us a useful reference value of approximately 6:18, but the final viewing site should be selected based on:
precise eclipse geometry,
legal access,
permit conditions,
road access,
safety,
open horizon,
and operational logistics.
This is why a dedicated eclipse trip needs to be planned more carefully than a normal sightseeing safari.
For the destination itself, read our Black Desert Egypt Guide.
Why Bahariya Works Well with a White Desert Tour
Bahariya is not simply a place to stand and watch the sky.
It is the gateway to a much larger adventure.
A classic desert route can include:
Bahariya Oasis,
Black Desert,
Crystal Mountain,
Agabat Valley,
Old and New White Desert landscapes,
camping,
sunset,
stargazing,
and sunrise.
That means international travelers can build an entire trip around Eclipse Day rather than traveling thousands of kilometers for six minutes alone.
The eclipse becomes the centerpiece.
The desert becomes the journey around it.
Explore our White Desert Egypt Guide for the wider destination.
For the geological stops, see Crystal Mountain Egypt and Agabat Valley Egypt.
A Sample Bahariya Eclipse & White Desert Itinerary
A practical multi-day route could look like this:
Day 1 — Cairo to Bahariya Oasis
Travel from Cairo into the Western Desert.
Arrive in Bahariya.
Explore palm groves, local landscapes or hot springs depending on timing.
Stay overnight in the oasis or at an approved camp.
Day 2 — Black Desert Exploration
Explore the wider Bahariya landscape and Black Desert.
Use the day to prepare for Eclipse Day and confirm the final viewing site based on current access, weather and eclipse conditions.
Day 3 — August 2, 2027: Eclipse Day
Move to the selected location well inside the path of totality.
Arrive several hours before maximum.
Prepare viewing equipment.
Experience the partial phases and approximately six minutes of totality depending on the exact coordinates.
Remain on site until crowds and traffic conditions allow an orderly departure.
Day 4 — Crystal Mountain & Agabat Valley
Continue into the Western Desert safari circuit.
Visit Crystal Mountain.
Explore Agabat Valley.
Continue toward White Desert landscapes.
Camp under the stars.
Day 5 — White Desert Sunrise & Return
Wake for sunrise.
Explore additional chalk formations.
Return through Bahariya toward Cairo.
Actual routes will depend on 2027 permit requirements, road conditions and local authorities.
For the packaged itinerary, use our 2027 Egypt Solar Eclipse White Desert Tour.
How Far Is Bahariya Oasis from Cairo?
Egypt’s official tourism website lists Bahariya at roughly 370 km southwest of Cairo.
Its official tourism distance chart lists approximately 363 km between Cairo and Bahariya Oasis, emphasizing that distance figures are approximate.
Travel time depends on:
Cairo traffic,
checkpoints,
rest stops,
road conditions,
and the exact starting point.
For eclipse planning, the important lesson is simple:
Do not plan to leave Cairo on the morning of August 2 and race to totality.
Eclipse Day is too important to depend on a long same-day transfer.
You should already be in Bahariya or near the selected viewing area well before the event.
Should You Arrive in Bahariya One or Two Days Early?
Yes.
Ideally, don’t structure the itinerary so that your first arrival in the region happens only hours before the eclipse.
Arriving earlier gives your operator time to monitor:
road access,
permit status,
local conditions,
dust,
weather,
and the final eclipse site.
It also reduces the risk that a transport delay from Cairo destroys a once-in-a-lifetime plan.
For an ordinary tour, losing two hours is annoying.
For a total solar eclipse, missing totality means waiting years for another opportunity somewhere else.
Build redundancy into the itinerary.
What Is the Historical Cloud Outlook for Bahariya?
Long-term weather data can help with early planning, but it cannot predict the weather for August 2, 2027.
Timeanddate’s current eclipse page for Al Bawiti reports that August 2 has been cloudy 0% of the time in its historical dataset since 2000.
That is encouraging.
It is not a guarantee.
A desert site can still be affected by:
high cloud,
dust,
haze,
sand,
or unusual weather.
So the correct way to interpret climate data is:
Bahariya appears promising historically, but actual 2027 forecasts will matter much more during the final days before the event.
We’ll cover that subject more deeply in the dedicated article:
Egypt Solar Eclipse 2027 Weather & Cloud Prospects: Bahariya, Siwa & Luxor.
Heat Is a Bigger Issue Than Many Eclipse Travelers Expect
The eclipse happens on August 2.
That means summer desert conditions.
Even if the sky is perfect, visitors may spend several hours outside waiting for and watching the event.
This creates practical issues involving:
sun exposure,
dehydration,
heat,
camera equipment,
and shade.
NASA reminds eclipse observers that even during partial eclipse phases, the Sun remains intense and observers may be outside for hours, so sunscreen, hats and protective clothing matter.
Your eclipse plan needs to consider human comfort as seriously as astronomy.
Six minutes of totality doesn’t require much endurance.
The hours surrounding it do.
Eclipse Eye Safety in Bahariya
A desert horizon does not make it safer to stare at the Sun.
During the partial phases, you need proper solar viewing protection.
NASA states that safe eclipse viewers should comply with ISO 12312-2, and ordinary sunglasses are not sufficient regardless of how dark they appear.
You can view the eclipse without eye protection only during the brief total phase when the Moon completely blocks the Sun’s bright face.
As soon as any bright part of the Sun returns, eye protection goes back on.
This is particularly important for groups because everyone should understand the timing before totality starts.
Cameras, Telescopes and Binoculars Need Their Own Solar Filters
Another common mistake is assuming eclipse glasses protect you while looking through a camera or binoculars.
They do not.
NASA warns that concentrated sunlight through optical equipment can cause severe eye injury and says cameras, binoculars and telescopes require suitable solar filters mounted on the front of the optics during partial phases.
If photography is important to your trip, do not experiment for the first time in the Bahariya desert on Eclipse Day.
Practice beforehand.
Know your camera.
Know how to attach the filter.
Know how to remove it safely for totality.
We’ll go much deeper into this in the upcoming 2027 Egypt Eclipse Photography Guide.
Best Type of Viewing Site in Bahariya
A good viewing location needs more than astronomical totality.
It should also have:
a clear solar view,
sufficient space,
safe vehicle access,
legal access,
room for tripods,
shade arrangements,
water,
emergency accessibility,
and enough distance from avoidable dust.
A beautiful dune might look amazing in a photograph but make a terrible group viewing site if vehicles cannot access it reliably.
Likewise, a point that gives two extra seconds of totality may be a poor choice if operational access is difficult.
The best eclipse site is where astronomy and logistics meet.
Why the Final Viewing Coordinates Matter
“Bahariya Oasis” covers a region.
“Black Desert” covers a region.
Even “Al Bawiti” covers more than one exact coordinate.
Eclipse duration changes as you move north or south relative to the centerline.
So professional planning should eventually move from:
Bahariya
to:
this exact approved viewing area
and finally:
these precise coordinates.
The location should then be checked against:
totality duration,
Sun altitude,
road access,
permit rules,
and weather forecasts.
That is how an eclipse itinerary becomes an eclipse expedition rather than a generic tour with solar glasses added to it.
Current Western Desert Permit and Access Rules
This information can change before August 2027, so always reconfirm it closer to travel.
As of October 1, 2026, current UK government travel guidance states that tourists entering areas including Bahariya Oasis, Farafra, the White Desert and Black Desert must apply for permits in advance and use an official guide. It also warns that mobile reception and medical facilities are limited.
The same guidance currently states that the road between Al Bawiti and Siwa is closed and advises against all but essential travel along that corridor.
Those conditions may change before the eclipse.
That is precisely why you should not build a 2027 expedition around an old road-trip blog.
Current local information matters.
Bahariya Is More Than an Eclipse Viewing Point
Even without the eclipse, Bahariya is worth exploring.
Egypt’s official tourism portal highlights:
palm and olive groves,
natural hot and cold springs,
the Valley of the Golden Mummies,
Gabal al-Ingleez,
desert camping,
and surrounding geological landscapes.
That gives the area real destination value.
Instead of treating Bahariya as a field where everybody stands for three hours and leaves, travelers can spend several days exploring the oasis and surrounding desert.
That makes the trip much richer.
What to Do in Bahariya Before Eclipse Day
A relaxed pre-eclipse day can work well.
Explore the oasis.
Get comfortable with the desert environment.
Check your equipment.
Charge batteries.
Confirm your eclipse glasses.
Review the safety briefing.
Photographers can rehearse tripod placement and camera handling.
Then visit a viewpoint or spring rather than exhausting yourself with an extremely long safari the day before totality.
Eclipse Day should begin rested.
What to Pack for the Bahariya Eclipse
The packing challenge is slightly different from a normal winter White Desert safari because the eclipse occurs in summer.
You’ll need strong sun protection, breathable clothing, eclipse viewers, plenty of drinking water, personal medication, hat, power banks and dust protection for electronics.
Photographers will also need solar filters, spare batteries, memory cards and stable tripods.
If your trip continues into overnight desert camping, your packing requirements expand again.
Use our existing What to Pack for White Desert Egypt guide for general safari preparation.
A dedicated 2027 Eclipse Packing Guide will also be part of this content cluster.
Can Families Watch the Eclipse in Bahariya?
Yes, but the logistics need to be family-friendly.
The eclipse itself is suitable for children as long as they understand and follow solar-viewing safety.
The more important questions concern:
summer heat,
long road transfers,
hours at the viewing site,
bathroom arrangements,
and keeping eclipse glasses correctly positioned during partial phases.
NASA specifically recommends supervising children using solar viewers.
A private or carefully organized group itinerary can make the experience much easier for families.
Bahariya Eclipse Photography Potential
From a photography perspective, Bahariya is interesting because the environment can become part of the story.
Instead of photographing only the Sun against an empty sky, you may be able to create wider images involving:
desert horizons,
dark hills,
4×4 vehicles,
silhouettes,
or oasis landscapes.
The challenge is balancing astrophotography with travel photography.
If you’re using a long telephoto lens, the Sun dominates.
If you’re using a wider frame, the desert becomes part of the composition.
Serious eclipse photographers may even use multiple cameras so one is dedicated to the corona while another captures the surrounding environment.
Plan this beforehand.
Six minutes feels long until you start adjusting settings.
Don't Spend All of Totality Looking at a Camera
This advice matters more than any lens recommendation.
If this is your first total eclipse, experience it directly too.
Set up automation where possible.
Practice your camera sequence in advance.
Then look up.
Watch the corona.
Look at the horizon.
Look at the desert around you.
Notice the changing light.
A technically perfect photograph is great.
Actually remembering the eclipse is better.
Is Bahariya Better for Photographers Than Luxor?
It depends on what you want to photograph.
Luxor offers iconic archaeological foregrounds and urban infrastructure.
Bahariya offers:
desert emptiness,
oasis landscape,
Black Desert scenery,
and the possibility of building the eclipse into a multi-day safari narrative.
Neither is objectively superior.
The visual story is different.
If your portfolio is focused on landscape, wilderness and astronomy, Bahariya may be especially attractive.
Can You Combine Bahariya Eclipse Viewing with White Desert Camping?
Yes — and that’s one of the strongest reasons to consider the area.
A properly designed itinerary can place Eclipse Day in Bahariya or another confirmed totality location and use surrounding days to explore White Desert landscapes.
That means your trip might contain:
a total solar eclipse,
Black Desert,
Crystal Mountain,
Agabat Valley,
White Desert chalk formations,
desert sunset,
stargazing,
camping,
and sunrise.
For normal camping conditions and expectations, read our White Desert Camping Guide.
Why Farafra Should Not Be Your Totality Site
Farafra is an excellent travel destination.
It is not currently calculated to receive totality in 2027.
Timeanddate gives Farafra a partial eclipse with magnitude approximately 0.994.
That means the Sun will be almost entirely covered.
But “almost” is the critical word.
A tiny piece of exposed photosphere is enough to keep the experience fundamentally different.
If you’re traveling specifically for totality, choose a site unquestionably inside the total path.
Then visit Farafra and the White Desert before or after the eclipse.
What If Weather Looks Poor in Bahariya?
This question cannot be answered definitively until much closer to August 2, 2027.
A strong eclipse operation should monitor multiple forecasting products in the days before the event.
However, any last-minute relocation plan must account for:
roads,
permits,
travel times,
group size,
and safety.
An eclipse chaser in a small car can move quickly.
A large tour group with desert vehicles and permits cannot necessarily chase a cloud hundreds of kilometers away at the last minute.
That’s why historical climate is useful — but logistical realism matters too.
How Early Should You Book?
A total eclipse is not like a normal holiday.
There is no flexible date.
Every eclipse traveler needs the same night.
The same vehicles.
The same guides.
The same August 2 viewing window.
That means demand can rise sharply as the event approaches.
Specialized trips also need more preparation than normal sightseeing because operators may have to coordinate:
permits,
accommodation,
viewing areas,
transport,
solar-viewing equipment,
camping,
and backup logistics.
If Bahariya is your preferred experience, earlier planning gives you more flexibility.
Bahariya Eclipse Tour vs Ordinary White Desert Tour
An ordinary White Desert safari is organized primarily around landscapes.
An eclipse tour needs to prioritize astronomy first.
That changes the planning hierarchy.
On Eclipse Day, the most important factors are:
being inside totality,
arriving early,
having safe solar equipment,
maintaining clear access,
and protecting the viewing window.
If a beautiful safari stop risks making the group late, you skip it.
You can see Crystal Mountain another day.
You cannot reschedule totality.
That mindset is essential.
Why Bahariya Could Become One of Egypt's Major Eclipse Destinations
Bahariya sits in an unusually attractive position.
It has:
more than six minutes of totality,
relative proximity to Cairo compared with deeper Western Desert locations,
a recognized tourism base,
and direct access to world-class desert landscapes.
Egypt’s official tourism authority describes Bahariya as the country’s closest Western Desert oasis to Cairo and specifically promotes camping and desert exploration in the surrounding region.
Combine that with Al Bawiti’s calculated 6 minutes 18 seconds of totality, and you have a destination that makes sense both astronomically and as a complete travel experience.
That’s a powerful combination.
Plan Your Bahariya Oasis Solar Eclipse 2027 Trip
The most important fact is simple:
Al Bawiti in Bahariya Oasis is currently calculated to receive approximately 6 minutes and 18 seconds of total solar eclipse on August 2, 2027.
Maximum eclipse occurs around 12:53 PM local time.
But a successful trip requires more than knowing the time.
You need:
the right viewing coordinates,
safe solar equipment,
a legal site,
permits,
desert transportation,
heat preparation,
and an itinerary that gets you there well before totality.
Do that correctly, and Bahariya offers something exceptional:
one of the longest total eclipses of the century combined with the Black Desert, White Desert and Egypt’s Western Desert landscapes.
